OUR HISTORY

How One Man's Empathy & Generosity Helped to Transform his Community.

This is a compelling story of how an empathetic individual, moved by the dire circumstances of poverty and hunger amongst his community, was able to provide valuable support and resources to locals, leading them towards self-sufficiency by establishing their own prosperous enterprises.

FOUNDER OF AGAPAI

Mr S W Mathias

Agapai is a Public Charitable Trust that was founded in the 1960s by Mr. SW Mathias, a philanthropic civil engineer. The trust's mission is to empower the underprivileged in India by providing them with the resources they need to achieve self-reliance. Agapai's early work focused on providing in-kind donations to underprivileged families in the Tamil Nadu district of Kanyakumari. These donations, which included baby chickens or lambs, helped to foster an entrepreneurial spirit among the beneficiaries. As a result, many of the beneficiaries were able to start their own businesses, which provided them with additional revenue streams. In 2018, Agapai transitioned into a Public Charitable Trust (registered in India). This allowed the trust to expand its reach and impact. Today, Agapa provides a variety of services to the underprivileged, including vocational training, financial literacy training, and job placement assistance. Agapai is committed to helping the underprivileged in India reach their full potential. The trust's work is helping to create a more just and equitable society.

Agapai is a non-profit organisation that was founded in response to the poverty and hunger that Mr. SW Mathias witnessed in villages. Mr. Mathias was moved by the plight of the rural poor, and he decided to extend monetary assistance to some of them as seed money for their small business ventures. This act of kindness inspired the launch of Agapai, which aims to change lives one at a time.
As part of its efforts, Agapai provides basic training and support to people in rural villages to acquire practical skills. This includes tailoring classes for girls, as well as training for visually impaired and disabled individuals to produce aroma candles that they can sell for a steady income. In the past, Agapai also offered free health and hygiene packages to those in need. However, due to insufficient funding, this initiative has been temporarily discontinued. Nevertheless, Agapai remains committed to resuming this activity and providing much-needed support to marginalised communities.

WHO WE ARE

Dr Suseela Mathias

Agapai has come into existence due to the benevolent contributions of a collective of philanthropic individuals who share a common vision of uplifting the underprivileged populace in rural areas and spreading joy amongst them. Among these compassionate benefactors is Dr. Suseela Mathias, a British citizen of Indian origin, and the daughter of the late Mr. S.W. Mathias. Driven by a strong conviction to empower and integrate rural communities into the mainstream, she frequently travels between her home and host countries, striving to take Agapai to the next level.
